Accommodation
A main attraction of Dinwiddy House is its great location, friendly atmosphere and excellent support staff. It boasts 510 single en-suite rooms set around a landscaped courtyard which helps to provide a communal spirit.
For the safety and security of residents Dinwiddy House has an entry card system, 24-hour security staff and CCTV cameras in and around the building.
All residents have access to a common room with TV, DVD, pool table and vending machines. For added convenience there are on-site launderette and bike storage facilities.
Since 1st July 2007 all of our residences operate a No Smoking policy throughout the buildings in line with the new UK Government legistlation.
Shared Facilities
Rooms are arranged in cluster flats of five, six, or seven bedrooms. Each flat is self-contained with a shared kitchen and dining area comprising two cookers, two fridges, two sinks, a microwave oven and a freezer.
Ample storage space is provided in the kitchen, and each resident has their own lockable food storage cupboard. The kitchen and communal corridor are cleaned on a weekly basis. A vacuum cleaner is provided so residents can clean their own rooms.
The flats have a locked front door and only the residents sharing the flat have a key.
Rooms
Residents have an individual key to their room. The rooms are study bedrooms, each with its own en-suite shower, toilet and basin. A bed, desk, chair, bookcase, wardrobe and drawers are provided and there are electrical sockets for residents to use their own computer, reading lamp, radio etc. There is also a telephone and an internet point for a broadband internet service which is provided by Keycom.
The rooms vary slightly in size and shape but are generally around 4 metres by 2.5 metres. The windows are approximately 1.4metres by 80 centimeters. The bed and mattress provided are a standard single size of 2metres by 90 centimeters.
Bed linen is not supplied but is available for purchase at the residence office, or from the market and shops in nearby Islington.
Location
Dinwiddy House is conveniently located a short walk from both SOAS campuses with main rail, underground and bus links close by. One of London's oldest markets, Chapel Market, is just five minutes walk towards the main Islington shopping area and has a good range of stalls, shops and cafes at reasonable prices.
At the end of the market street is a large supermarket, Sainsbury's, which is open 24 hours and is where many residents buy their weekly shopping. Opposite Sainsbury's is a new shopping mall with several high-street shops, a nine-screen cinema, and a great bookshop, Borders, which is open until 11pm most nights.
The shopping mall leads on to Islington's Upper Street which has a wide range of restaurants and bars and is always buzzing with life. A useful guide to the area is available at www.angelislington.net.
Behind Dinwiddy House is a 'local' pub called the Golden Lion which is popular with residents, especially on music nights. Another popular hang-out is the Water Rats in Gray's Inn Road which has regular performances from live bands and is en-route to the main SOAS campus.
King's Cross Thameslink rail and underground station is only a couple of minutes walk from Dinwiddy House. From here you can get to Oxford Street and the centre of the West End in just three stops. There is also a bus stop outside the station with regular buses to Camden and its famous weekend market. Not to be missed!
Dinwiddy House is less than 5 minutes away from our other SOAS residence, Paul Robeson House.
